SHANKEL – Dorothy Mae, 85, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at home with her daughters by her side.
Born in Worcester Mass, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Annie (Smith) Fisher.
Dorothy emigrated to Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia at an early age and graduated from Provincial Normal College. She began her teaching career at age 17 spanning nearly three decades in Lunenburg, Halifax and Queens Counties retiring from the former Liverpool Junior High School. She served as an organist for churches in Petite Riviere and Hunt’s Point. She was a member of Zion United Church and served as an elder, a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and a member of the U.C.W. She was a member of the Queens County Arts and Crafts Council, the Gorham Chapter of the I.O.D.E. the Retired Teachers Organization, Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool Ladies Auxiliary and Emerald Rebekah Lodge #6 and a member of the local seniors activity group. She enjoyed many crafts, music and travel.
She furthered her education with numerous courses from Acadia, St. Mary’s and Dalhousie Universities. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughters Suanne (Gordon) Sampson of Port Mouton and Catherine Blake of Alexander, Maine, grandchildren Alexandra Fahey, Katrina King, Emily Dobbin, all of Nfld., Morgan and Benjamin Sampson, Bryan, Caleb and Rebecca Blake. Great grandchildren Alexander, Liam, Devon, Olivia, Addison and Lucas.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years Earl Winslow, cherished daughter Sheri Maureen Shankel-Woolfrey, infant grandson Patrick Blake, brother Warren and sister in law Marjorie (Fisher) Munro.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service will be Friday, September 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Zion United Church, Liverpool. Reverend Sheila Redden-Smith officiating. A private family committal will take place at a later date in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Port Mouton. No flowers by request, donations may be made to Queens County Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses or to Zion United Church, Liverpool.
