Peter Laurence Fountain

d. February 15, 2025

Peter Laurence Fountain, 80, of Milton, Queens County, passed away suddenly February 15, 2025.

Peter was the 12th of 15 children, born to Charles and Pelma Fountain in Everton, Ontario.

Peter was a lifelong educator and volunteer. His teaching career started in Sudbury, Ontario. After marrying Janet, they taught together for 2 years in Ferland, Northern Ontario in a new Ojibway school. In 1970 and 1971 Peter and Janet spent time traveling in Germany and Europe then returned to Canada in 1971 where Peter taught in North York, Ontario. In 1973, Peter and Janet moved to Nova Scotia where he began a 25 year teaching career in Queens County. After he retired, he continued to substitute teach for some years.

Peter was involved as a volunteer with many organizations. He was an Elder of the Milton Christian Church and served as Treasurer for more than 40 years. He was also on the All Canada Board for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Maritime Disciples Board for many years. He was very involved with Johnston Christian Park as a Camp Director, Camp Counsellor, and volunteer who handled many clean up, maintenance, building, and general Mr. Fix-It duties. He was a trustee and treasurer for the Milton Cemetery. Previously, he served on the boards of the Queens County Food Bank and Feed Nova Scotia, and was involved in various roles with the local and provincial Retired Teachers’ Association.

When his two youngest daughters were figure skating, he trained to be a volunteer accountant responsible for computing the judge’s scores at figure skating competitions and continued to do so for some time after his daughters were no longer competing.

Peter loved his family, helping others, and telling (long!) stories. He enjoyed all things mathematical, and tinkering to build and fix things in often unorthodox but well-thought out ways.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Janet (nee Walker), his children Gwendolyn (John Garland), Rebecca (Jamie Carruthers), Deborah (Paul Boudreau), and his grandchildren Connor and Liam Carruthers. He is survived by siblings Vera Grills, Alice Woodhouse, Grace Stewart, Joyce Morrell, Don Fountain, Linda Schneider, Donna Revell, and Dorris Willard.

Besides his parents, Peter was predeceased by siblings William Fountain, Jim Fountain, Ted Fountain, Tom Fountain, Ken Fountain, and Mary Snow.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS, where the funeral service will be held Friday, February 21, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., Reverend Russell Prime officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date.
