Katharine Austen Myers

MYERS, Katharine Austen, 97, of Port Medway, passed away on Tuesday October 15^th 2013 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool.

Born in Dartmouth the year before the Halifax Explosion, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Katharine (Austen) Munro.

While as an adult she spent most of her time in Halifax and Port Medway, in her youth she was through and through a true Dartmouth girl.  She grew up at the “five corners” and paddled on Banook and MicMac lakes, where she met the love of her life – Gordon Myers.  With Gordon, they spent their early years together raising their boys – Gary and Lowrey – at Graham’s Grove during the warm months, moving to downtown Dartmouth only when the snow came.

While after the war she moved to Halifax and then on to Port Medway, she always had a special place in her heart for Dartmouth. She will always be remembered by her grandsons and their children for sharing such wonderful stories of Dartmouth and what a special place it is to grow up in.

In her twilight years, she became the Grand Dame of Port Medway hosting many Sunday afternoon teas for her very special dear friends during which she repeatedly told them how wonderful her grandsons were.

Her grandsons though returned the favour. They have, and will continue to, tell stories of how good a grandmother Kay had been.  In their opinion, she was a true matriarch of the Myers family worthy of the Highland Munro tradition she was so fiercely proud of. She was one of kind and will be truly missed.

She is survived by son Gary of Halifax, daughter-in-law Janet of Bridgewater, five grandsons (Loren, Troy, Brantz, Christopher, and Jason), and sixteen great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband Gordon, son Lowrey, sisters Olga and Annie, and brothers Fred and John.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside service will be held November 1st at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Judy Cross officiating, in the Old Port Medway Cemetery – where she will be the last person interred, just the way she would like it.

The family invites all residents of Port Medway to join us in a celebration of her truly remarkable life.  The Myers family wants to give special thanks to the residents of Port Medway, as well as the nursing staff at Queens General Hospital for taking great care of Kay.
