Murray Fraser DeMond - 94, of South Brookfield, Queens County, passed away on January 11, 2025, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.
Born on October 25, 1930, in South Brookfield, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Gladys (Thompson) DeMond.
Murray worked for the Dept. of Highways before finding employment planing and grading lumber, first at Caledonia Hardwood, then Willis Forest Ltd., and finally Caledonia Woodworkers. He worked for the lumber companies for 33 years before retiring at age 60 due to a broken foot which took a couple of years to heal. He always said the way to early retirement was to marry an older woman.
After retirement, Murray and his wife Daisy took a number of trips, including Nashville, Florida, and the Rockies. Daisy planned their vacations but Murray always came back having had a great time, and often ready to head out on the next adventure.
Murray enjoyed woodworking. He built his own house as well as several pieces of furniture (TV stands, potting bench, chest of drawers).
He managed a small Christmas tree lot beside his house. He had regular customers who came year after year for that special tree. He was still selling trees this past Christmas although customers were now cutting their own while he watched from the window.
Murray enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles; attending community suppers, card parties, and music events (especially Country & Western); and gardening (specializing in geraniums and Christmas Cactus). Needing a winter hobby, he took up Rag Rug Braiding about 20 years ago and made approximately 20 rugs, many of which were given to family members. An article about his Rug Braiding was featured in the local South Shore Breaker in 2023.
For 40 years, until the time of his death, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the South Brookfield Cemetery.
Murray is survived by three daughters, Kathy DeMond (Gary Levy) of Brooklyn, Pat DeMond (Rob Whynot) of Milton, Valerie DeMond (Tim Croft) of Milton; one stepdaughter, Leann (Phillip) Bentley of Upper Tantallon; two brothers, Glen of South Brookfield and Lowell (Marion) of Bridgewater; six grandchildren, Capt. Sean Levy, Kerry Whynot, Jade Whynot, James DeMond, Lisa Miller, and John Bentley; seven great-grandchildren, Sofia, Mae, Rose, Jayden, Sienna, Sullivan, and River.
Besides his parents, Murray was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Daisy (Whynot) and great-granddaughter Taylor.
Cremation his taken place under the direction of Chandlers Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Queens General Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be made below.
Special thanks to the many Home Support workers who visited Murray over the past few years and took the time to listen to his many stories. He will be missed by all who knew him.
