LANNAN – It is with great sadness that the family of Frederick (Fred) Edward, 89, of Liverpool, Queens County, Nova Scotia announces the loss of our beloved father and grandfather on April 14, 2022 unexpectedly at home.
Born in Liverpool, Fred was the son of the late Martin Lannan and the late Violet Schrader. Fred started working at a young age for the Chandler Brothers Fish business in Moose Harbor. In the 1960’s the business merged into Mersey Seafoods where Fred became a fish cutter for many years before illness sent him into early retirement. He took much pride in his work, so much that he taught each of his three children the very job he loved, where they too became employees of Mersey Seafoods when they grew old enough. Without failure, he would check to see which boats were tied up at the wharf when going across the bridge on Bristol whenever he was driven past.
Fred also loved and enjoyed the outdoors, spending his younger years fishing and hunting and teaching his son, Cecil, how to do the very same. He loved cutting and splitting his firewood and if anyone was looking to rid themselves of any extra, Fred was always ready to have a load dumped in his yard. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays who rarely missed a game and was always up for a good chat about his favorite team. He enjoyed family gatherings; the Annual Family Washer Tournament was one of his favorites at which he became known as “Gramps” to everyone that wasn’t even family. For a man his age he sure could toss those washers in that pipe and you could be sure he was usually standing in one of the top three prize spots when the day was done.
Fred also loved sitting in the window in his favorite chair, drinking his Tim Horton’s coffee with his ceramic dog, Brownie, that sat in the window with him, waiting to give all his neighbors a wave as they passed his house. The cooler months were a time for Fred to enjoy putting up his Christmas decorations, trimming his tree and having it nice and toasty warm in his house. You always knew when you went to visit you wouldn’t be cold; Fred made sure you wouldn’t be sitting around with a coat on in his place. After all, he had to make sure all the firewood he loved went to good use.
Fred was loved by everyone who met him, making friends wherever he went usually through his love of music. He played the guitar, the accordion but his most cherished instrument was his harmonicas, or “mouth organs” as he called them. The more people danced, the more he would make his mouth organ sing. He would play for hours if you’d let him; the happiness and pride he received for making other people happy through his toe tapping tunes was undeniable. The time he spent at music jams with his friends and his daughter, Rose, will be cherished and remembered by many. But Fred had one dream – and luckily just before Covid-19 hit – it came true. He was called up on the stage of the Hank Snow Tribute to play for a larger crowd and he did not disappoint.
But most of all, Fred loved his family, especially the love of his life, Verna, which he lost in 2015. Luckily, he had three wonderful children that were there for him, checking on him and making sure he had everything he needed. There wasn’t a night that his daughter, Janet, didn’t call to have a chat to make sure all was going ok for her dad.
Fred is survived by his daughters, Janet Broome (Bobby) of Brooklyn, Rosetta (Rose) Anthony of Milton and son Cecil (Vicki) of Gull Island, sisters Geraldine Stewart of Lockeport, Patricia Tarr (David) of Black Falls Alberta, Linda Backman (Joey) of Liverpool and brother Roy Schrader (Barb) of Milton. He is also survived and remembered as “Big Gramp” by his five granddaughters, Shelley Weagle (Kevin), Liza Zwicker (Jeff), Amanda Broome (Brian), Melissa Foley (Darcie) and Jennifer Broome (Stuart), eleven great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Fred is predeceased by his loving wife, Verna, brother John, sisters Marion, Judith, son-in-law, Ronald Anthony and step-father, Ronnie Schrader.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandler’s Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at Chandler’s Funeral Home on Friday, April 22, 2022 with visitation from 6-7pm followed by a service led by Rev.
