Kirk S. Mitton

d. May 27, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Kirk Sheldon Mitton of Brooklyn, passed away at South Shore Regional Hospital on Monday May 27, surrounded by his family.

Born in Liverpool, Kirk was a son of the late James “Jim” and Beulah Mitton.

Kirk was a man of many professions, but a man of few words. He was an extremely hard worker and wore many hats throughout his lifetime. Alongside his brother Reid, they formed ‘K & R Diving’ in the early 90’s until they both moved on to go work at Bowater Mersey up until its closure in 2012. When that chapter ended, the inseparable Mitton duo started a new adventure, opening their second business together “Brothers Insulfoam”. Kirk and Reid built that business from the ground up with pride as the two complimented each other very well in life and in business.

In his earlier years, if you couldn’t find Kirk’s truck at his house, the only other place it could be was at the Brooklyn Marina. Kirk loved spending time on the water out on his Ol’ Cape Island fishing boat, The “Miss Behavin”, a name only fit for Kirk Mitton himself. Kirk would pull out past the breakwater, slam the throttle down, and take off full speed ahead to Coffin’s Island, where he spent many evenings out there at his Camp with his family and some of his closest friends. Kirk always relied on those same friends to tow him back to safety every single time the “Miss Behavin” broke down out there in the harbour, leaving him, and his passengers stranded.

Kirk’s love for the water was a family affair as he shared his passion of scuba diving with both of his siblings, Reid and Kelli (and her husband Paul) and then from a young age, taught Josh and Sarah the ropes. He was a tough teacher, but he got the job done and managed to get everyone certified, which birthed the tradition of family diving trips and a lifetime of bacon wrapped scallops. Kirk also enjoyed visiting Cuba year after year with Anne, where he was always in the water and taking off on diving and fishing adventures with his Cuban friends.

Kirk enjoyed spending time in the woods which led to him building his Camp “In the Meadows”, where he could happily spend hours back there just listening to his beloved “Q104 on the radio in solitude. Kirk had a love for deer hunting and enjoyed taking his side-by-side out on the trails and going on the occasional run with the Rider’s Club.

Kirk’s sanctuary was his garage. He spent countless hours out there woodworking and working on his ‘toys’ including his many boats, four-wheeler, side-by-side, tractor and any other project he happened to have on the go. The true Jack of all trades enjoyed working with his hands and building things. If you had a vision, he would bring that vision to life quickly and with such ease, but not before pretending to complain about it first. He had a witty sense of humour and enjoyed aggravating those closest to him. He was everyone’s first call when things broke or went wrong, because you could always count on him to fix it or to give you a helping hand.

Although Kirk had a tough exterior, he had a very soft interior and cared deeply for those he loved. He built a Dog Kennel for Anne when she decided she would like to work for herself, which quickly transpired into an army of dogs taking over his bed on a regular occurrence. Kirk truly was the biggest supporter in our family and would move mountains to help each and every one of us. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and would always go above and beyond for them. Despite Sarah and Josh living away in different provinces, he always kept close tabs on them as he was well known for his 2 - 3 hour phone calls to talk about everything and sometimes, just nothing at all.

Kirk leaves behind his spouse, Anne and their pack of dogs; Brooklyn, Jack, Nova and Kedji. His children; Josh (Katie) of Pennfield NB, Sarah (Will) of Toronto ON, Maddie (Owen) of Liverpool, and Jessica (Chad) of Milton, His siblings; Reid (Lib) of Greenfield, and Kelli (Paul) of Halifax, His nieces; Jody and Marah, His nephew; Noah and his Grandchildren; Cooper, Kealie, Quinn, Hunter, Trinity, Ellie and Marah. Kirk found great friendship with his lifelong neighbours, Randy and Wendy and in his co-pilot, Richie.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home. A Funeral service will be held on Thursday June 6th, at 11 am at the Brooklyn Gazebo, next to the Marina. In lieu of flowers, Donations in Kirk’s memory can be made to the SPCA or The Nova Scotia Golden Retriever Rescue. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.

Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Kirk’s many friends and extended family, with a special thank you to Bea and Ed, who were like second parents to Kirk, and to the Doctors and Nursing Staff at Queens General Hospital and South Shore Regional for their kindness, compassion and care they provided Kirk and our family, over the past few months.
