JOUDREY – Grace Matilda, known to all as “Nanny”, 91, of Greenfield, Queens County, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 in North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia NS where she had been a resident since February 1, 2019.
Born in Waterloo to the late Albert St. Clair and Alexdrinia “Sadie” (Wile) Veinot, she was the last surviving member of a family of nine children.
Grace loved being surrounded by her family and friends and treasured every moment of visits. Along with the love for her family, she was passionate in all kinds of hand work. She loved to sew and for many years made aprons for the Sewing Circle for their seasonal tea and sales. She was always working at knitting, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, tatting or any other hand work she could pick up. She would spend hours on word search books and crosswords and faithfully did the lexicon, but never sent it in. She just enjoyed the challenge! Her love for the outdoors and for anything that she could grow showed in her radiant array of colors in her flower gardens as well as the bountiful produce she would get from her vegetable gardens. She looked forward to all the salting, pickling, canning and preserving while smiling as she thought of the long winter days ahead. But she made sure they were ready for it with lots of jars, buckets, barrels and bins full to the top for the season.
Another passion she so dearly looked forward to was spending time with the grandchildren and eagerly working on crafts with them. Every year as Easter rolled around she found herself counting the days knowing the grandchildren would be there to paint an assortment of Easter eggs to give to other family members or to a friend on Easter morning. She could never get enough of family gatherings and looked forward to every occasion that would once again allow the family to gather around the giant size table for a family meal.
In her younger days, she was always kept busy doing home perms for the ladies of the community and cutting the hair of their children while at the same time so dearly enjoying the visit of a good friend. Another place for family and friends was at the community hall card parties or even in your own home – now there you could really laugh all evening. What a joy life was!
Grace is survived by her son Larry (Marcella Publicover) and their children; Cory, Tracy (Paxson) Ngassa and Tanya (Michael) Joudrey-Crouse. Daughters Sandra Cardinell and her two girls Shauna Hatt and Paula Cardinell and Faye (Gordon) Joudrey-Hamilton. Nine great grandchildren Cody Hatt, Sean and Julian Cardinell, Cassandra and Jordan Joudrey, Jade Nauss, Leyton, Bennet and Stella Ngassa, two great great grandchildren MacKenzy Cardinell and Skylar Joudrey. As well as her “Chosen son” and his wife Lawrence “Sonny” and Deborah “Debbie” Ramey and her two remaining sisters in law Gladys Veinot and Hazel (Veinot) Delong.
She was predeceased by her husband Jordan Carver in November 1997 and her one and only sister Helen (Elmer) Ramey as well as her seven brothers Wilbert, Ernest, Maurice, Harry, Hazen, Murray and Lawrence.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. At Grace’s request, there will be a private family graveside memorial service held at a later date. No flowers by request as she stated that flowers would not be a necessity at this time whereas a donation to a good cause would be more beneficial. Memorial donations may be made to the Greenfield United Baptist Church, Greenfield Fire Dept., North Queens Nursing Home or to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.
