Joseph Lester McKenna, 95, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2024.
Lester, as he was known to all, was born in Milton, Nova Scotia; a son of the late Charles B. and Elizabeth (Rogers) McKenna.
Lester had an impressive 42 year career with the Canadian Air Force. Virtually a lifelong career of dedicated service. He was an active member of the Canadian Legion and Shriners, forging friendships and stories along the way. His military career had Lester and family living in France, Germany, and the USA. Most recently, Lester was proud to have delivered a heartfelt speech at a Remembrance Day ceremony where he lived.
His children recall family camping trips, strawberry milkshakes, the best French bread and homemade chow-chow ever. Lester’s face beamed with love and pride when hearing how well his grandchildren were doing and loved the stories of hockey tournaments, graduations, weddings and babies. Lester was a lover of sports too! You would often see him enjoying Hockey Night in Canada, Masters Golf tournaments, Blue Jays baseball games and of course football.
Lester was always full of high praise for the amazing staff at the Admiral Long Term Care Home in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He was always treated with the highest care and respect; something his children will forever be grateful for.
Lester is survived by his remaining adult children, Sandra (Robert MacDonald), Donald (Laura), Paula (Franc Colicchio), and Alane, his step-children, Paul, David and Cyril. Lester proudly also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; all of which he loved dearly.
Lester is predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Lillian, his eldest son John Clifford, eldest daughter Karen.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in the Milton Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Lester’s children encourage you to donate to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made below
