Jane “Jean” Gainford Fisher

Fisher, Jane “Jean” Gainford, 94, of Port Mouton, Queens County, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015, in Queens Manor, Liverpool.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late David and Isabella (Gainford) Thomson.

Jean was a  war bride landing in Canada at Pier 21 in 1946. She and her husband Leander operated the local post office out of their house in Port Mouton for many years. She was very active in the Port Mouton United Church over the years, having been the choir director for many years as well as a Sunday School teacher and a  member of the UCW. Jean had the distinction of being a cancer survivor and being the oldest laryngectomy patient in the world.  She enjoyed bowling, going to Tops and was a member of the Port Mouton Seniors Club. Jean was always happiest when spending time with her loving family and friends and will be fondly remembered as a fun loving person.

She is survived by daughters, Brenda (Ira) Huskins, of Port Mouton, Patricia “Tish” Fisher (Richard Weagle), of Brooklyn, Margo (Borden) Hanley, of Liverpool; Grandchildren, Terri, David, Patty, Dwayne, Christy, Shannon; great grandchildren, Garrett, Layney, Connor, Charlie, Livia, Laughlin and Christopher.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Leander; brother, David.

A Celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Port Mouton.
