Ferne Rosena Whynot

d. August 11, 2024

Whynot - Ferne Rosena, 87, of Milton, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, NS on Sunday, August 11, 2024 with family by her side.

Born in Middlewood, Ferne was a daughter of the late Robert Charles Connolly and Mildred Arlene (Crouse) (Connolly) Clattenburg.

Ferne worked as a clerk at several local Liverpool stores and in later years as a food demonstrator at Superstore. After marrying the love of her life, she and Lester settled in Milton on the beautiful Mersey River where they raised their family and spent 69 wonderful years together. Family was everything to Ferne and she loved them all unconditionally. She loved to cook for her family and would prepare a feast if company arrived at meal time. Ferne and Lester would open their home to anyone who needed a meal or a place to stay.

Ferne loved the outdoors, picking berries, gardening and fishing. When their children were younger, they loved to camp in Greenfield at the family cottage and later at Ponhook campground. She loved animals, especially the family dogs.

Ferne had a tremendous faith in her Lord and loved to share the gospel even in her final days at the hospital. She was an amazing prayer warrior and prayed for her family and friends on a daily basis. She loved her church and was a willing helper. She taught Sunday school, was involved with the Womens’ Missionary Society and sang in the church choir. Ferne loved to sing and would use her beautiful alto voice to harmonize with her two girls. They sang at many churches and events.

Ferne was a former volunteer at Queens Manor and would often sit with palliative patients. She was a TOPS leader for the local chapter for many years.

When Ferne and Lester were in their 60’s, they decided to take a leap and venture on a plane for the first time. They travelled to BC to visit their good friends, Mildred and Elliot and continued the annual trip for several years. While there, it was a big competition to see who could catch the most or biggest salmon. They always came back with stories of their amazing adventures.

Ferne had a quick wit and a great sense of humour. She kept her family laughing until the day before she passed. She made getting through all the struggles of her illness a little easier for her family. When the grandchildren came along, she became the Nanny with the best stories. The stories of the cabin in the woods was the ultimate favourite.

Ferne was a beautiful soul who touched so many lives. She was the best mother any child could ever ask for and she was an amazing life partner to her husband, Lester.

Ferne is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Lester Jr.; daughters Valerie (David) Slauenwhite of Middlewood; Tina (Mike) Quinn of Liverpool; Carolee (Russell) Prime of Milton.
