Charles Herbert Hearn

d. April 19, 2025

Hearn - Charles H., of Westfield, Queens county, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

Born in Antigonish, Charlie was a son of the late Wm. Lewis and Rita (Delorey) Hearn.

Charlie spent his early working career involved in the forestry industry. He then started a 31 year career at Kedjimkujik National Park retiring as Backcountry Maintenance Supervisor in 2013. He had many stories of his fellow workers at the Park with whom he had fond and kind words to say of his time there.

Charlie was very much at home walking in the woods surrounded by nature. He was so knowledgeable of the trees, plants and such during his walks. He loved to share that knowledge with whomever was fortunate to be with him on those strolls.

A workshop stands behind Charlie and Heather’s home and this workshop was Charlie’s place where he made his master crafts. His magic happened there! He could weave amazing, beautiful baskets. He started with the ash trees, cut into lengths, split, working until the weavers were just right made into the widths needed. It didn’t take him long to produce the perfect basket - plain, with color or with leather straps, all made by Charlie.

As well as his baskets, Charlie cut out paddles; first the rough cutout and soon carved out until they were the perfect shape. He looked for special wood such as curly and bird’s eye maple.

His crafts didn’t stop there. He took pride in his crooked knives. Not only the blade, the handle was important, measuring a hand to make the fit and finding the best specialty wood for the handle and a sheath was made by Charlie as well.

Charlie loved his family and friends and stayed in contact with so many. He was always thinking of someone and phone calls soon followed.

Charlie is survived by is wife Heather (Merry); his brothers Louis (Ida) of Bowden, AB; Patrick (Dianne) of Mochelle, NS; Paul (Susan) of Princedale, NS and Harold. His steadfast friends Todd Labrador and Daniel Thimot.

Besides his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his sister Theresa Merry.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. A Celebration of Charlie’s life will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the North Queens Fire Hall, Caledonia, NS. No flowers by request, donations may be made to the North Queens Fire Association. Online condolences may be made below.
